The Oral Health Foundation welcomes the Government's commitment to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, as announced in the King's Speech.

The charity believes this legislation represents a significant step towards improving the nation's overall and oral health.

Tobacco use is a leading cause of several cancers including mouth cancer, gum disease, and tooth loss. By phasing out tobacco sales, we can prevent these devastating conditions and promote healthier, brighter smiles across the country.

The focus on reducing youth vaping is equally important, ensuring future generations do not face the dangers of nicotine addiction and devastating loss of life. We urge swift action to pass this bill and protect our oral health.

A survey by public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (Ash), estimates nearly one million youngsters in Britain admitted to trying e-cigarettes in 2024.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, says: "This bill is a monumental stride in public health policy. Reducing tobacco and vape usage will not only decrease the prevalence of oral health issues but also enhance overall well-being.”

Why this matters for oral health

  1. Reducing tobacco use: The Bill’s provisions, particularly the generational ban on tobacco sales to those born after January 1, 2009, hold immense promise for oral health. By preventing young people from starting smoking, we can significantly reduce the risk of oral diseases, including gum disease, tooth decay, and mouth cancer.
  2. Protecting oral health: Smoking and vaping have negative effects on oral tissues. Tobacco products contain harmful chemicals that weaken gums, stain teeth, and contribute to bad breath. The Bill’s focus on reducing tobacco use aligns with our mission to promote better oral health for all.
  3. Supporting quitting efforts: We commend the increased funding for local stop smoking services. These resources are vital for supporting current smokers in their journey toward quitting. By assisting smokers in their cessation efforts, we can improve overall oral health outcomes.
  4. Protecting general health: Smoking harms the body increasing the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, stroke and diabetes. Passive smoking over time can also cause health problems for friends and families of long-term smokers.

The Oral Health Foundation stands firmly behind the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. We believe it is a crucial step toward creating a smoke-free generation and safeguarding oral health for years to come.
