Oral health information Oral health library Treatments Dental bridge A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to natural teeth or implants on either side. A dental bridge: Is fixed in place (you can’t take it out). Uses the teeth next to the gap for support. Replaces the missing tooth (or teeth) with a natural-looking false tooth. Why replace a missing tooth with a bridge? Leaving a gap can cause problems over time. A dental bridge can help by: Improving your appearance and confidence. Helping you chew and speak properly. Stopping nearby teeth from drifting into the gap. Keeping your bite balanced. Reducing the risk of food getting trapped, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Types of dental bridges Your dental team will recommend the best option for you, but common types include: Traditional (fixed) bridge Crowns are placed on the teeth on either side of the gap. A false tooth is joined between them. The bridge is made in a dental laboratory and cemented into place. Adhesive bridge (or resin-bonded bridge) Has small “wings” that are bonded to the back of nearby teeth. Needs very little drilling. Often used for front teeth, where biting forces are lighter. What are dental bridges made from? Dental bridges are designed to look like natural teeth. They may be made from: Porcelain bonded to metal for strength. Other strong metals under a porcelain coating. All-porcelain materials for a very natural appearance. Your dental team will explain which option suits your mouth and budget. Can I have a bridge straight after a tooth is removed? Usually, your gums need time to heal after a tooth is removed. Healing can take around 6 months. You may be offered a temporary solution while you wait. Once healing is complete, the bridge can be fitted. Can everyone have a dental bridge? Not always. A bridge may be suitable if: The teeth next to the gap are strong and healthy. There is good support from the bone and gums. Your dental team will check your mouth carefully and talk through all your options. How do I look after a dental bridge? Good cleaning is essential to keep your bridge and gums healthy. Do this every day: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes, last thing at night and once more during the day, with a fluoride toothpaste. Clean carefully around the bridge and gumline. Clean under the false tooth using special floss or cleaning aids. Visit your dental team as often as they recommend. Your dentist or hygienist will show you the best way to clean your bridge. How long does a dental bridge last? With good care, a bridge can last many years. Regular check-ups help spot problems early. Keeping your remaining teeth healthy is just as important as replacing the missing ones. How much does a dental bridge cost? The cost depends on: The type of bridge. The number of teeth involved. The materials used. Always ask for: A written treatment plan. A clear cost estimate before treatment starts. Need advice? If you have a missing tooth and want to know if a dental bridge is right for you, speak to your dental team. They can explain your options and help you choose what works best for your mouth.
