Sugar-free chewing gum can help protect your teeth when you are on the go.

It is not a replacement for brushing, but it can be useful after meals and snacks.

Why is sugar-free chewing gum good for teeth?

After you eat or drink, acids are produced in your mouth. These acids come from bacteria in plaque and from acidic foods and drinks.

Acid can:

  • Weaken the enamel (the tooth's outer layer).
  • Lead to tooth decay (holes in teeth).
  • Cause enamel erosion.

Your saliva helps to wash away acids and protect your teeth. Chewing sugar-free gum makes your mouth produce more saliva.

More saliva helps to:

  • Neutralise harmful acids.
  • Wash away food and bacteria.
  • Protect enamel.

Chewing sugar-free gum for about 20 minutes after eating or drinking can help your mouth return to a safer, less acidic level more quickly.

What is xylitol?

Many sugar-free gums contain a sweetener called xylitol.

Xylitol:

  • Tastes sweet but does not cause tooth decay.
  • Can help reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in plaque.
  • May help protect teeth when used regularly as part of a good oral care routine.

Can it help with dry mouth and bad breath?

Yes.

Chewing sugar-free gum increases saliva flow. This can:

  • Make a dry mouth feel more comfortable.
  • Help freshen breath.

Dry mouth can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum problems, so anything that safely increases saliva can help.

When should I chew sugar-free gum?

You can chew sugar-free gum:

  • After meals.
  • After snacks.
  • When you cannot brush your teeth.

It is most helpful straight after eating or drinking.

Who should avoid chewing gum?

Sugar-free gum is not suitable for:

  • Children under 7 years old (choking risk).
  • People who wear dentures.
  • Some people with fixed or removable braces (ask your dental team).

Do I still need to brush?

Yes. Chewing gum does not replace brushing.

You should still:

  • Brush your teeth last thing at night and once more during the day with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth every day.

Sugar-free gum is an extra help, not a substitute for your normal oral care routine.
