Dr Nigel Carter OBE has been Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation for more than 20 years.

A previous chairman and long-term trustee of the charity, Dr Nigel Carter OBE has a keen interest in public health and experience in health promotion. 

Dr Carter has been a dentist for more than four decades and started his career as a general dental practitioner with a mixed NHS and private practice based in Birmingham.

The Oral Health Foundation’s role as co-ordinator of numerous national campaigns, including Mouth Cancer Action Month, involves Dr Carter working with health departments of all four UK countries as well as representatives of major health, cancer, dental and medical organisations at the highest level. 

As immediate past chair of the Royal Society for Public Health, Dr Carter is involved in liaison and co-operation between the major public health bodies, Faculty of Public Health and Register of Public Health Specialists and has broad interests in public health and the social determinants of heath.

Dr Carter is an experienced broadcaster and media spokesman giving hundreds of interviews per year on television, radio and to the print media.

In 2012, Dr Carter was honoured with an OBE for Services to Dentistry and Dental Health in the Queen’s Jubilee honours.

Dr Carter is the immediate past chairman of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe, a lobby group based in Brussels liaising with European parliamentarians and the European Commission. The group, of which the Oral Health Foundation is a member, aims to improve oral health across Europe and reduce inequalities.
