A mouthguard is a custom-made, rubber-like cover worn over your teeth and gums. It cushions your mouth and helps protect your teeth and jaw from injury.

You should wear a mouthguard for contact sports and sports where there is a risk of being hit in the mouth.

These include:

  • Cricket.
  • Rugby.
  • Hockey.
  • Football.
  • Martial arts.
  • American football.
  • Boxing.

Without a mouthguard, you are more likely to have:

  • Broken or chipped teeth.
  • Teeth knocked out.
  • Injuries to your lips, tongue, or cheeks.
  • Jaw injuries.

Mouthguards can also help reduce the impact of a blow to the head.

How do I get a mouthguard?

Your dentist can make a custom-made mouthguard for you.

  • The dentist takes a mould (impression) of your teeth.
  • This is sent to a dental laboratory.
  • The lab makes a mouthguard that fits your mouth exactly.

You usually receive it within about a week.

How long does a mouthguard last?

Children and teenagers may need new mouthguards more often.

  • Growing jaws and new adult teeth can change how it fits.
  • If it feels tight or loose, see your dentist.

Adults with all their adult teeth can keep the same mouthguard for longer, but it may still need replacing every few years.

How do I look after a mouthguard?

  • Clean it after each use.
  • Soak it in a denture, retainer, or brace cleaning solution.
  • Store it in a hard plastic case when not in use.
  • Keep it away from heat, which can change its shape.

What about shop-bought or home kits?

These are not recommended.

  • They often do not fit properly.
  • They can feel uncomfortable.
  • They may fall out during sport.
  • They offer less protection for teeth and jaws.
  • They can be a choking risk.

A custom-made mouthguard from your dentist gives the best fit and protection.
