Policy & media Media centre News Ask your local MP to join the NHS dentistry debate 19 MAY 2025 Let your voice be heard! This Thursday (22 May), MPs will gather in the House of Commons to debate the future of NHS dentistry – a service that millions across the UK rely on, yet one that is struggling to survive. We’re asking you to write to your local MP and urge them to attend and speak up during this important debate. The more voices heard in Parliament, the more likely we are to see meaningful change. What’s going wrong with NHS dentistry? For too long, NHS dentistry has been underfunded, overstretched and overlooked. The result? Millions unable to access routine NHS dental care. Growing numbers of people turning to unsafe “DIY dentistry.” Tooth decay still the leading cause of hospital admissions among children. Dentists across the country are delivering NHS treatment at a financial loss. Many feel they have no choice but to reduce NHS commitment or move to private care altogether. The system simply isn’t working. What might this debate cover? The House of Commons debate is expected to explore the most pressing issues affecting NHS dentistry, including: Reforming the dental contract to make NHS work viable and sustainable. Addressing workforce shortages and improving recruitment and retention. Investing in prevention – so fewer people end up needing costly, invasive treatment. This is a rare opportunity to get NHS dentistry the attention it deserves in Parliament. But it’s vital your MP knows it matters to you. Why your voice matters The Government has promised to make NHS dentistry "fit for the future" – but action has been slow, and the crisis is growing. The current system is not meeting the needs of the public or the professionals working within it. Your voice, combined with others across the country, can help push this up the political agenda. Let’s make sure NHS dentistry gets the attention – and reform – it urgently needs. What should I say? We’ve written a template letter you can download and personalise. It explains why this debate matters and asks your MP to take part.
