There are lots of products available to help keep teeth and gums healthy.

This can feel overwhelming, but the basics are simple. Your dentist or hygienist can recommend products that suit your mouth and any specific dental needs.

Toothpaste

Fluoride toothpaste helps to strengthen enamel and protect teeth from tooth decay.

Adults and children over 3 years should use a toothpaste containing 1350–1500ppm fluoride.

Children under 3 years should use a toothpaste containing at least 1000ppm fluoride.

Toothbrushes

Choose a toothbrush with:

  • A small to medium-sized head.
  • Soft-to-medium bristles.
  • A handle that feels comfortable to hold.

Electric toothbrushes are often more effective at removing plaque.

If you use one, look for:

  • A two-minute timer.
  • A pressure sensor to stop you from brushing too hard.
  • A head that rotates or oscillates.

Cleaning between your teeth

A toothbrush cannot reach all tooth surfaces.

The spaces between your teeth are where plaque often builds up, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

You can use:

  • Interdental brushes. These are very effective and available in different sizes.
  • Dental floss or tape.
  • Water flossers. These use a jet of water and may be helpful if you find brushes or floss difficult to use.

Your dental team can help you choose the right size and type.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash can be a helpful extra step in your daily oral care routine.

Fluoride mouthwash can help strengthen teeth and reduce the risk of tooth decay, and antibacterial mouthwash may help with gum problems.

If you are over 7 years old and your gums bleed, we recommend using a daily fluoride mouthwash that is clinically proven to reduce plaque.

What about children?

Children need help and supervision with toothbrushing.

  • Use a small toothbrush with soft bristles.
  • Choose child-friendly flavours if mint is too strong.
  • Children over 7 may use mouthwash, but always check the label for age guidance.

Building good habits early helps protect teeth for life.
