If you feel nervous about going to the dentist, relaxation techniques or sedation can help make your visit easier and more comfortable.

What is sedation?

Sedation helps you feel calm and relaxed during dental treatment. There are two main types used in dentistry:

  • IV (intravenous) sedation. This is given through a small injection in your hand or arm.
  • Inhalation sedation (“gas and air”). You breathe a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small mask placed over your nose.

How will I feel with IV sedation?

  • You will feel very relaxed and drowsy.
  • You may not remember much, or any, of the treatment.
  • You will still be able to hear your dentist and follow simple instructions.
  • The effects take time to wear off, so you will need someone to take you home.
  • You must not drive, drink alcohol, or operate machinery for the rest of the day.

How can gas and air help me?

Gas and air, also known as inhalation sedation or relative analgesia, is breathed in through a small, comfortable nosepiece.

  • It creates a calm, relaxed feeling very quickly.
  • You stay awake and aware during treatment.
  • Treatment can be carried out without discomfort.
  • The effects wear off quickly.
  • You can usually drive again about 15 minutes after treatment.

How does relaxation work?

When we feel stressed or afraid, such as before a dental visit, our bodies release chemicals that increase anxiety. Relaxation techniques help calm the body and reduce this response.

It is not possible to be anxious and relaxed at the same time. Learning to relax can help you feel more in control and reduce dental anxiety.

Does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy can help some people manage anxiety. A trained hypnotherapist teaches relaxation and coping techniques that you can use before and during dental appointments.

Is there anything else that could help?

If your anxiety feels overwhelming, your doctor may prescribe a mild sedative in tablet or liquid form to take before your appointment. This can help you feel calmer and more relaxed when attending the dental practice.

Your dentist and doctor can help you decide which option is best for you.
