Root canal treatment is needed when the inside of a tooth (the pulp, which contains the nerve and blood supply) becomes infected.

This can happen because of tooth decay, a crack, or an injury to the tooth.

The infection can lead to an abscess, which is often painful.

If root canal treatment is not carried out, repeated infection may necessitate removal of the tooth.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

  • Root canal treatment itself should not be painful.
  • Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic, so it should feel similar to having a filling.
  • After treatment, the tooth may feel tender for a few days.
  • This is usually a normal “settling down” feeling and does not last long.

How long does the treatment take?

You will usually need at least two appointments.

First appointment:

  • Your dentist makes a small opening in the tooth.
  • The infected or dead tissue is removed from inside the root canals.
  • The canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected.
  • The canals are then sealed with a material called gutta-percha.
  • A temporary filling is placed to close the tooth.

Second appointment:

  • If the tooth is comfortable and infection-free, the temporary filling is removed.
  • A permanent filling is placed to seal the tooth.

How long does a root canal treatment last?

On average, a root-filled tooth can last between 5 and 10 years, but many last much longer with good care.

The tooth still needs to be brushed and looked after like your other teeth. A root-filled tooth can still decay if oral hygiene is poor.

Will I need a crown?

After root canal treatment, the tooth no longer has a living nerve and can become more brittle.

  • This can make it more likely to break.
  • If your dentist feels a filling will not be strong enough, they may recommend a crown.
  • A crown covers the tooth and helps protect and strengthen it.

Your dentist will advise on the best option for your individual situation.
