Oral health information Oral health library Veneers Veneers are a way of improving the look of your front teeth. They can change the colour, shape and overall appearance of a tooth. What is a veneer? A veneer is a thin covering that is fixed to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers are usually made from: Porcelain. Tooth-coloured composite (filling material). They fit over the front of the tooth in a similar way to how a false nail fits over a natural nail. Why might I have a veneer? Veneers are often used to improve the appearance of teeth. They can help if you have: Discoloured teeth that do not respond to whitening. Chipped or worn teeth. Small gaps between front teeth. Teeth that are uneven in shape or size. Slightly crooked-looking teeth. How are veneers fitted? Having a veneer usually involves more than one visit. First visit: A small amount of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth. This makes space for the veneer so it does not feel bulky. An impression (mould) of your teeth is taken. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the veneer is made. Second visit: The veneer is carefully checked for fit and colour. It is then bonded (glued) to the tooth using a strong dental adhesive. The result is designed to look natural and blend in with your other teeth. How long do veneers last? Veneers can last many years if they are looked after properly. However, they can: Chip. Crack. Come loose. Small chips may be repaired. Sometimes a new veneer is needed. Good daily cleaning and regular dental check-ups will help them last longer. How much do veneers cost? Veneers are usually a private treatment. Costs can vary between dental practices. Your dental team should: Explain your options. Discuss the benefits and risks. Give you a clear estimate of the cost before treatment starts. Summary Veneers can improve the look of your smile, but they are a long-term treatment. Healthy teeth and gums, and good oral hygiene, are important before and after having veneers. Last reviewed : Next review due : Manage Cookie Preferences
