Your mouth can change at any age. Knowing what to look for helps you act early. Many problems are easier to treat when spotted quickly.

Look out for:

  • Gums that bleed when brushing.

  • Persistent bad breath.

  • Tooth sensitivity.

  • Loose teeth.

  • Changes in colour or shape.

  • Ulcers that do not heal within three weeks.

Gum disease is often painless in the early stages. Bleeding gums are not normal and should not be ignored.

Tooth decay can also develop without obvious pain at first. Frequent sugary snacks and drinks increase risk. Acidic drinks can wear away enamel, leading to sensitivity and erosion.

Other changes may relate to lifestyle. Smoking increases the risk of gum disease and mouth cancer. Alcohol can increase the risk of erosion and cancer, especially when combined with smoking.

If you notice any unusual lumps, red or white patches, or ongoing discomfort, contact your dental team promptly.

Regular check-ups help spot changes early. At home, daily brushing, cleaning between teeth and sensible food and drink choices remain the foundation of a healthy smile.

Paying attention to small changes can prevent bigger problems later.
