Young adulthood often brings new freedom. You may move away from home, start work or go to university. Routines can change. Smile care can slip down the priority list.

This is a key time to build independent habits that last.

You should:

  • Brush last thing at night and at one other time during the day.

  • Use fluoride toothpaste (1350–1500ppm).

  • Clean between your teeth daily.

  • Visit a dental team as recommended.

Diet often changes in this stage of life. Busy days, social events and convenience foods can increase the risk of decay and erosion.

Try to:

  • Keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes.

  • Choose water or milk between meals.

  • Avoid frequent fizzy or energy drinks.

  • Wait at least one hour before brushing after acidic drinks.

Lifestyle choices also matter. Smoking and vaping can stain teeth and damage gums. Alcohol can increase the risk of decay and erosion. If you smoke and drink, the risks are higher.

Young adults may also think about appearance. Orthodontic treatment, whitening and cosmetic procedures are common at this age. Always seek advice from a qualified dental professional before starting treatment.

Building strong habits now protects your smile for decades to come.
